KEEP CHILDREN HEALTHY WITH FRUITS AND VEGGIES
The idea that children don’t eat enough fruits and vegetables is not one that has escaped the back of minds by any means. Many of us are aware of the general lack of nutrition that our children are subjected to on a regular basis, and what has unfortunately become an accepted reality. Dr. Steven Coward writes for the Ashville Times and reminds us of the importance of phytonutrients. In his September 2008 article, he contends that we must encourage our children to eat more fruits and vegetables and how we as parents must find creative ways to make sure that they do. Dr. Coward echoes what the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) and other governmental agencies have discovered during their studies of food and health—we all need to consume at least five servings of fruits and vegetables for general nutrition and to prevent the development of serious health conditions. This is especially significant news for children because their bodies are growing and require phytonutrients by the baskets full so that they can develop strong and healthy. We all need to consume adequate amounts of fruits and vegetables, but as Dr. Coward mentions there is a potential future problem that can develop if children don’t consume proper phytonutrients. Children who don’t eat fruits and vegetables tend to grow up to be adults who don’t eat these foods. By ensuring that children eat a balanced diet that contains plenty of fruits and vegetables, Dr. Coward informs parents that they can help to keep them healthier in the winter and lessen their chances of becoming obese. The main message that resonates throughout Dr. Coward’s writing is that parents must take a stance—by any means necessary—to make certain that their children are getting proper nutrients. As Dr. Coward mentions, when left to their own devices children will consume only those foods that taste good to them. Unfortunately, these tend to be foods that lack the necessary phytonutrients their growing bodies need. Parents should not ignore the importance of phytonutrients.
