Natural Sources Of Vitamin D

NATURAL SOURCES OF VITAMIN D

Where Do I Get My Vitamin-D?

Vitamin-D is one of the fat-soluble vitamins (which means it dissolves in the body's fat stores) and unfortunately is not readily present in many of the foods we eat. However, natural sources of Vitamin-D include fatty fish such as salmon, mackerel, tuna fish and sardines. Quality blended cod liver oil supplements are also an excellent source of naturally occurring Vitamin-D provided the product is not synthetic.

To a lesser degree, Vitamin-D can be found in egg yolks, liver, beef and some cheeses.

The best and most prolific source of Vitamin-D comes as a direct result of exposure to sunlight. This is a complicated process and requires many steps in the body until the product the body needs is realized. That is the natural conversion of certain biochemicals in the body that eventually become the natural source Vitamin-D we need to thrive which is Vitamin D-3. A cautionary statement should be made here as you do not want to go out and start burning yourself in the sun. Normal exposure to sunlight is usually all that is needed to meet daily Vitamin-D requirements. Natural Vitamin D

What Can Happen If I Don't Have Enough Vitamin-D?

The signs and symptoms of Vitamin-D deficiencies can occur. One of the most prevalent and dreadful is osteoporosis. Osteoporosis is simply bone that becomes thin and fragile. Therefore, putting one at risk for bone fractures and breaks. It is important to note that calcium and Vitamin-D work together to keep bones strong.

Data suggests that adequate Vitamin-D levels may help reduce cancer risk as well. In particular prostate, colon and breast cancers. While this is currently suggested, more research is required to confirm initial clinical suspicions.

Vitamin-D Toxicity

All Vitamin-D supplements on the market are synthetic vitamins. With the exception of some cod liver oils that do not spike their products with synthetic vitamin-D or synthetic Vitamin-A. Because vitamin pills are simply chemicals, it is important to not take mega doses of synthetic vitamins due to associated toxicity symptoms. This includes Vitamin-D as well.

Overdosing on synthetic Vitamin-D can result in a reduced appetite, nausea, vomiting, weight loss and constipation. Excess synthetic Vitamin-D can raise blood calcium levels to dangerous levels resulting in abnormal heart rates and confusion.

All in all, it is simply best to get the Vitamin-D that is needed via sun exposure or via the diet. If natural sources of Vitamin-D are not obtainable, please be sure to follow directions in order to avoid synthetic Vitamin-D toxicity.
