With so many different vitamins and minerals, it can be a challenge to attain adequate amounts of all of them from your diet alone alone. Many people turn to vitamin and mineral supplements to ensure that they do not develop a deficiency caused by a poor diet.

In fact, the vitamin and mineral supplement industry accounts for billions of dollars of sales in the United States. Thirty-five percent of Americans admit to supplementing their diet with a vitamin or mineral supplement.

The reason for this widespread trend is that most people believe that vitamins and minerals can ensure that no deficiency develops and that mega dosing with certain vitamins and minerals can prevent chronic disease. Vitamins And Minerals

Ironically, supplementing the diet with synthetic vitamins and minerals is ineffective and potentially harmful in certain cases.

The supplement market is haphazardly regulated by the Food and Drug Administration. The FDA does require supplement manufacturers to regularly check the purity of their products. However, manufacturers do a poor job maintaining purity and the FDA does an ever worse job at enforcing it.

Independent laboratories have confirmed again and again dramatic differences between the claimed purity of a supplement compared to the actual purity when tested. Furthermore, these supplements often contain metal fillers to substitute for the missing vitamins and minerals content.

Before making the decision to take a vitamin or mineral supplement, consider not only the substandard purity and the potentially harmful fillers, but also how these products are manufactured.

For example, synthetic vitamin C is produced from corn syrup that is heated to form simple sugars. Then, acetone and hydrochloric acid are added during the process to form a Vitamin C supplement.

The chemicals used to make these supplements and the by-products that are left behind for your consumption may be a reason that these supplements have shown to actually increase the risk of some diseases via some very solid European Research.

Supplementation with synthetic vitamin C actually increases free radical activity contrary to the antioxidant activity found in natural vitamin C sources.  Supplementation with synthetic vitamin E another antioxidant increases your chances for stroke, and lung cancer.

These vitamins and minerals supplements are also ineffective. When these synthetic pills are taken, little is absorbed in the gut. This is in contrast to the high concentrations of vitamins and minerals that are absorbed when whole foods are eaten.

Choose Whole Food Supplements

Whole foods contain phytonutrients, cofactors, and enzymes not found in synthetic supplements that enhance vitamin and mineral absorption.  Whole foods also contain reasonable amounts of vitamins and minerals, which are absorbed easier than the toxic amounts found in standard vitamin supplements.

Whole foods can easily supply you with the necessary amounts of vitamins and minerals that you need without the expense and risk of synthetic supplements. By eating a diet that includes a wide variety of fruits and vegetables with limited amounts of meat, dairy, and starch, whole foods offer superior nutrition to people of all ages.

However, the reality is many are so busy living life; work, family and other obligations often make it difficult for us to eat as we should therefore not getting the adequate nutrition we should.
